878 Longmeadow Street (#52 The
Stebbins-Hammett House -1795)
This house was built for Benjamin
Stebbins and his bride, Lucy Colton, around 1795. The house was
originally all brick and was painted red. When the late J. S.
Carr bought the home, he intended to take the house down and
build anew. However, his wife fell in love with the fine old
wood and chimney cupboard in the north room. Only the two lower
front rooms were saved. Their brick walls are part of the original
house, while the remainder of the house is wood from the later
period.
