797 Longmeadow Street (#44 The
Old House on The Green -1833)
This house is attributed to Justin
Colton with a date of construction of 1833. However, it is believed
to be much older. Typical of many 17th and 18th century New England
houses, it was willed to two different parties, with trespassing
rights to a third party. In 1845 Justin Colton willed one half
of the house to his wife and one half to his daughter. The third
party was allowed "all that part of said house with right
to passage up and down the chamber stairs ...". In March,
1940, a Tea Room was opened on the first floor. The Tea Room
was operated until 1958. The sign on the front door read, "The
Old House on the Green".
